The Killer Vegan – Union, NJ | Review
I recently got a new job, and to celebrate my friend and I got a veritable feast from Killer Vegan in Union, NJ. The sign out front states that Killer Vegan is a diner and delicatessen, but I’d say it’s more diner than delicatessen. The menu consists of sandwiches, burgers, sides, soups, smoothies, and desserts.
The inside was pretty cool looking.
I really liked the ambiance, and even the bathroom was decorated with their amazing Killer Vegan logo.
The place was pretty empty when I was there; there was only two other customers in the diner with me, and I didn’t see any other folks come in while I waited for my food. Also, it was a bit of a mess behind the register. There were smoothie ingredients all over the counters, which I think they were letting thaw, and it didn’t seem as clean as I would have liked.
That didn’t stop me from ordering their delicious food, or devouring it once I got it, though!
Killer Vegan Eats
I ordered The Pizza Burger with Roasted Cauliflower, The Gunslinger with Fries, Sausage and Peppers with Kale Slaw, …and Mac and Cheese for All, and an enormous Cinnamon Bun.
The Pizza Burger was fantastic, and was my favorite sandwich of the bunch. The cheese was creamy and the sauce was really flavorful.
The Sausage and Peppers was my second favorite, though the sausages were whole which made the sandwich cumbersome to eat. Traditionally sausage and peppers are chopped up making them easier to bite.
I didn’t enjoy The Gunslinger at all, the tempeh on top was way spicy, and the sauce was thick, and unappealing. The sides were pretty good, the roasted cauliflower was nicely toasted and the kale slaw had a flavorful dressing.
The Mac and Cheese was gluten free, and I’m not a fan of gluten free noodles, these were a bit gummy. But the cheese was good enough that we ate the whole serving.
The Cinnamon Bun was topped with the best vegan cream cheese frosting I’ve ever had, but the bun itself itself tasted a day or two old. It wasn’t that fluffy, bready, texture that I’m looking for in a cinnamon bun. It was thin and tough, and it’s one of the only cinnamon buns I’ve had that I didn’t actually finish.
Overall, Killer Vegan is definitely a place I would revisit. I would get The Pizza Burger again for sure, with a side of roasted cauliflower. I’m also looking forward to trying some of their other dishes the next time around.
